Review Keywords with me - let’s get started!

Step 1) Pull out the tools!

You’ll need a couple of items before we get started:

  • Keyword planner doc

  • Open up your website in the browser

  • Notebook or Google doc to write notes

Before you dive head first in your data, do a quick review of the blog post itself.

  • When was the last time I looked at this blog post?

  • What keywords are you currently targeting on the blog post?

  • What are your perceptions of the blog post right now?

Taking the time to connect with your site and content before looking at Google Analytics is a smart way to set the stage for the changes you will be making in the future.

Step 2) Google Analytics : Behaviour > Site Content > All Pages

First, we will be looking at the all pages report, which tells us how visitors to our site are viewing different pages.

First, we will use the search bar at the top of the report to filter this specific blog post.

Then, I’ll make sure the date range has enough data. Usually 3 - 6 months is the sweet spot.

The metrics I’ll be focusing are Bounce Rate, Time Spent on Page, and Conversions.

I can also do a comparison of the last 3 months to see if this blog post has done comparatively better.

As I’m going through all the information, I’m making notes and brainstorming ideas on how I can improve these metrics. Adding more internal links is one way to lower bounce rate but I think I also want to add more content on this page as well. I’m happy with time spent on page, but I’m also willing to give this blog post a bit more so that’s it’s a really juicy resource for someone who lands here.

Step 3) Search Console : Performance Report

The Search Console gives us more specific data on your keywords and how you are already ranking in Google.

Here we will also filter by keywords or by the specific page.

Then we will start to analyze impressions, clicks, and position to decide which keyword is a better fit for our website and could potentially rank better. Since I’ve already done the initial review of what keywords I’m already targeting, I can also see how those keywords have progressed in the last few months.

Any keywords I find interesting or I want to keep tracking, I’ll fill them out in my Keyword Strategy doc.

Finally, I make a plan of action on the keywords I want to integrate to my blog post.

Step 4) Take Action - Make website changes

I know this step seems obvious but so many times people get so bogged down with the data, they forget to actually set aside time to action what they learned.

For me, this looks like setting aside at least 1 - 2 hours in the next few days to start making some of those changes.

My action list for this blog post specific includes:

  • Adding new keywords to title and meta description

  • Creating new headlines

  • Adding extra content to blog post to make it more helpful

  • Adding more internal links throughout the blog post to other blog posts

  • Adding more internal links to courses

  • Adding more branded images
