Should local businesses do website SEO?

I’ve had this conversation over and over again with colleagues - what is the role of your website as a local business?

(By local business, I mean you are specifically focused on selling/attracting clients in your geographic area)

Of course, Local SEO is different than Website SEO (I cover this in this episode here) but I believe having a website can truly complement many areas of your Local business.

Some factors to consider are:

  • Your industry - if you are a photographer for example, than having a website is a no-brainer since it is a great space to feature your beautiful photography and allow potential clients to explore your work.

  • Your marketing style - if you like writing and more evergreen (slightly more passive) marketing, then having a website is the way to go. You’ll publish content that will get found again and again by your audience in the years to come. This is one of the biggest differences from website to social media (a whole podcast episode on this topic here

  • Your goals - how do you want people to interact with you and get to know you. If you envision your own online space where they can explore who you are, then a website is definitely the way to go.

  • Your audience - I believe Google is universal across all generations, although the way people search is definitely changing. Would your audience really appreciate you having a website for them to get to know you? Or do they prefer social media (or other platforms)? Something else to consider.

Taking all these factors into consideration will help you decide next steps on your website in your local business.

Also - considering everything that is happening nowadays with the pandemic, having a website allows you to take online orders/consultations.

I don’t believe in shoulds in business. Instead find what feels right to you and follow that.

So yes, a website can help you attract local clients, since it is another digital asset that amplifies your online presence.

Apart from that, make sure to setup your Google My Business profile and get all your local directories in order. Again, I cover more about Local SEO in this episode.
