Creating a blogging plan / ep151

When you have a plan behind your SEO, everything changes. It’s not something you randomly remember (or forget) to do at the end of your work day, but an intentional time that gets factored into your overall marketing. And the results will start to show in your site traffic, leads, and overall business growth.

So here’s my 3-step process for creating your very own blogging routine. Excited yet?

Step 1) Review your current marketing rhythms and cycles

Before diving into creating your own blogging routine, it’s important to look at what you are already doing consistently in your marketing. If we can find a way to match an already existing rhythms, there is a much higher probability that your blogging will happen on a consistent basis.

Whether you create batch content monthly, or write weekly, look at your current rhythms for all parts of your marketing, including:

  • Social Media content

  • Email Newsletter

  • YouTube

  • Podcasting

Then start thinking about how your blogging and SEO tasks can fit into this existing cycle.

Instead of making SEO a whole separate thing, instead integrate it easily by adding 30 min or 1 hour to an existing task. Feels more doable, right?

Step 2) Decide what feels safe to commit to

When I talk about safe, I don’t meant your safety, but more comfortable. I believe that this process for you can actually be something you look forward to doing.

Now that you have more awareness around your rhythms, decide how often you want to be blogging, whether it is weekly, monthly, or writing all your content quarterly.

Whatever you decide, make a commitment for the next 90 days to stick to that plan. Three months is a good chunk of time for you to visualize and at the same time experiment with the current frequency. You may need to tweak at the end of that time because you learned a couple of things about you and your rhythms.

Step 3) Map out a weekly plan (and bake in some flexibility)

I recommend you document your plan (paper, Asana, Google docs..whatever works!) and map out what you wil be writing about each week.

For example:

  • Week 1 - Topic 1

  • Week 2 - Topic 2

  • Week 3 - Topic 3

  • Week 4 - Topic 4

..etc. etc..get the idea?

Defining specifically what you will be blogging about in the next 12 weeks can help you visualize the plan and confirm (again!) if you see yourself completing it. It should feel doable and slightly like you’re flexing your muscles.

Finally, make sure to pull out your calendar and actually block off the time you will use for SEO and blogging tasks like:

  • Researching

  • Writing

  • Finding keywords

  • Adding keywords

  • Sharing your blog in the rest of your marketing

If you use something like Asana or Trello, take the time to map out all these tasks and set reminders to keep you on track. Also having a monthly check-in with your blogging plan is helpful!

Bonus step: align your blogging plan with your services/products

I’m all about making SEO a profitable marketing channel for your business. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you are mapping out the topics and keywords you want to target:

  • Are these topics and keywords related to what I’m selling?

  • What are the top questions my clients have before buying my service/course/product?

  • Can I add these to my blogging plan?

  • How can I give my site visitors a taste of what it’s like to work with me, through my blog topics?

That’s all! Once you’ve built your blogging plan, let me know in the comments. I’d love to cheer you on as you create your very own consistency in visitors to your site.
