Day 10: Using your analytics to build the right mindset

Congratulations! You made it to Day 10 of the Quickstart Guide! The idea of this final post is to seal all the information we have been learning and inspire you to continue spending time in your Google Analytics. Read and let me know if any questions come up at the end!

I recently have come to adopt the philosophy that a slow change over time is better than a drastic switch. Building a habit over time is a more secure and sensible way to make sure you continue doing it, even if there are some weeks where you stop. I think this idea can be applied to anything, including your Google Analytics.

I know that some of you (okay, most of you) find Google Analytics a little daunting and I get it. I used to be that person - squinting at the numbers and getting lost in a sea of help articles that left me feeling useless. But slowly getting friendly with this tool will not only give you important answers that you should be aware of, but also give you the edge, that extra step to making sure your site is getting in front of the right eyes and offering what they want to see.

With Google Analytics, you aren’t guessing, but instead looking at real user data.

Once you’ve done the analysis, there are so many potential strategy areas you could use your analytics to create a real wave in your business:

  • Planning a better launch, based on data from the last launch

  • Brainstorming new content, based on data coming from your blog

  • Investigating a new service/product offering, based on data coming from blog content, your current services/products

  • Shifting your strategy on an ongoing campaign, based on data tracking progress and trends.

These are just some opportunities you can take to utilize your Google Analytics. And this can work for pretty much anyone. Copywriters, Graphic Designers, Crafters, Bloggers, Coaches - you are all welcome to crack open your Google Analytics, blow off the dust and look around.

Want to build a long term relationship with your Google Analytics? Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Schedule a monthly Google Analytics date for you to spend time with your data. Imagine it to be a first date and have no expectations. Just set 30 min (15 min is also okay, if you are busy busy) and get in there.

  • Make sure to come with specific questions before your date. This will help you stay focused once you open up the tool.

  • Focus on one thing at a time. Take notes. Get familiar with the numbers and draw hypothesis.

  • Make sure to use the easy access “Analytics Education” in each report. Just click on the nerd hat on the top right of each report. Not only will this give you quick information, but it is directly relevant to the report you are currently viewing. This is very helpful when you want quick on what you are viewing in the moment.

Whether you are just starting in your business or have a couple years under your belt, it is important that you use your analytics. Always approach it from a place of curiosity and learning. Over time, this will get easier.

I leave you with a quote that, again, I think can be applied to anything you are currently obsessing with for the new year. A new colour scheme for your website, different tone to experiment with on your blog posts, or maybe a new service using card readings. Whatever it is, don’t forget that it is all a learning experience.

Everything is a learning process: any time you fall over, it's just teaching you to stand up the next time.
